Most chess sets end the evening in a drawstring bag, pieces knocking against each other in the dark.

This one closes into itself. Lift the playing field away and every piece drops into a recess cut to its own shape, so the set that sat out all week still looks the way it did the day it arrived.

Here is what the case does that a bag cannot. The playing field lifts off the base, and the felt-lined tray underneath holds each piece in its own cut recess. Kings, knights and pawns each have a place, so nothing rubs against anything else between games. The pieces themselves are metal rather than moulded, the king standing 2.5 inches, heavy enough to hold a square when someone leans on the table.

Who it's for: the player who wants the set to live on the console table between games, and who has lost patience with pieces stored in a bag.
